Let’s start with a staple. The gin and tonic is the perfect go-to drink for summer (light and crisp), weddings (hard to mess up and easy to drink all night), and toddler tantrums (when every word is “no”. Seriously- I just walked past my 2 year old this morning and he just looked at me and said “NO!” I didn’t even ask him to do anything. He was just protesting my existence)
Gin and tonic- pretty simple, right? Yes, but there is a method to crafting this drink to make it really stand out:
1. Fill a glass with ice. I like a small rocks glass.
2. Select a nice juicy lime. Roll it on the countertop to help release more juice. Slice it in half, and then slice that half into quarters. Squeeze over ice. This helps disburse lime flavor into the drink. Put lime quarter into glass with ice.
3. Pour a shot of gin over the ice. Top it off a little if it’s been a tough day. Or if it’s been a great day. Or if it’s just Tuesday. No judgement here. I like Bombay Sapphire or Tangeray, but feel free to use your favorite here.
4. Fill glass with tonic. Don’t use diet. It tastes terrible and you are already drinking your calories so might as well make it taste excellent and not terrible. I hate “diet” mixers. They’re the worst.
5. Mix with toddler spoon (or regular spoon if you are fancy) and enjoy!
Tips:
The lime is the most important part- don’t skimp here!
Don’t overdo the tonic. If using a small rocks glass, just fill remainder of glass. If using a larger glass, add tonic to taste but be careful not to flood out the gin. Like life, balance is important here.
